Hi, I'm Rhoel — a self-taught Spanish learner living in Madrid.

I’m originally from the Philippines. During a quarter-life crisis, I found myself completely lost — unsure of what I was doing or where I was headed. So back in 2022, I left my corporate job in Manila and made a big change: I moved to Madrid and started working as a sushiman. I´m so glad I made this move!

What is this blog about?

When I first started learning Spanish, I had high hopes. There were so many apps and online courses promising fluency in just a few weeks. “Speak Spanish in 30 days!” they said. But wow — that couldn’t have been further from the truth.

Around that time, I also started journaling. And I noticed something: most of my entries were rants about the apps and courses I had tried. I kept wondering, “Is it just me? Why does everyone make this sound so easy?” The reality is, learning a language is hard — and not enough people talk about that part.

So, I decided to create this blog.

This is where I share my honest opinions, personal wins and fails, and the things that actually helped me as a self-taught learner. If you’ve ever felt frustrated or stuck, I want you to know — you’re not the only one. And you’re definitely not alone.

I made this blog to show the real side of language learning — the small victories, the awkward moments, the tools that helped (and the ones that didn’t). In a world where AI can spit out perfect sentences in seconds, I wanted to build something more human. Something honest.

You won’t find any “fluent in 30 days” claims here. Just honest reflections, practical advice, and a bit of encouragement from someone who’s learning right along with you.

Thanks for being here — I’m really glad you are.

Let’s make Spanish feel a little less intimidating, together.

PS. It´s 2025 and my Spanish still sucks. 😂
